The Theme of AIEx 2022!

By the grace of Allah (SWT) this year marks the 6th AlHuda International Science Exhibition (AIEx) of AlHuda International School.  AIEx is a mega event held every alternate year at AIS, which engages the entire school; encouraging each student and staff to undertake thorough research and prepare projects on the selected theme.

The ultimate purpose of AIEx is to gain the pleasure of the Almighty Allah through maximising students’ potential, steering them in the right direction and by doing Da’wah in a positive and inspiring manner.

Over the years, along with the school, this unique event is also growing bigger and better. We have witnessed our students excel in innovation, teamwork, performance and so much more!

Environmental protection or sustainability is embedded in Islam. It is the duty of all Muslims to respect, nurture and care for the environment. We are all ‘stewards’ of nature, and will be questioned about the negative impact we leave on this earth. It is our responsibility to take extra care to conserve natural resources and to mitigate the impact of climate change in order to reverse the effects of exponential industrial growth and excessive energy use.

The whole world, including Pakistan, is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change in recent times. The heat waves in Peshawar and Karachi, Lahore’s overwhelming smog, and the disastrous flooding across the nation are beginning to have dire health and economic impacts.  Management of natural resources and environmental conservation is essential for maintaining community sustainability for the future.

It is high time to prevent further damage & ensure we have healthy places to live, for generations to come, In Shā Allāh

AIEx is an inspirational journey to understand the changes occurring in our natural world, the causes and the impact. A journey to explore how we can rethink the future because…

The main theme ‘Earth Matters’ is further divided in the following 6 sub themes, which the students will explore through a myriad of assigned projects.

Clean and green environment is a basic need. The environmental pollution in the form of air, water and land pollution, has severely affected life. For earth to survive, pollution must be tackled and reversed. Keeping the environment clean and green through elimination of pollution is of utmost priority to sustain a healthy evolution of life.

A. Sustain to Green

We are aiming for environmental sustainability, which is the responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect global ecosystems to support health and well being, now and in the future.

B. Agri Learners

Agriculture forms the backbone of the economic system for many countries. In addition to preserving the Earth’s natural resources, sustainable agriculture benefits the environment by helping maintain soil quality, reducing erosion and preserving water.

The World We Want Tomorrow Starts with How We Act Today!

Recent years have witnessed contamination of air by introduction of unwanted chemicals, biological matter and particulates which is harmful for living beings and causes damage to environment. Some of the most prominent reasons behind air pollution are the exhaust fumes from vehicles which are rich in carbon monoxide. The increased air pollution has had many adverse effects on human beings, other organisms and even the environment. Increased air pollution has resulted in global warming, which is posing a great challenge to mankind. Air pollution is the prime reason behind ozone depletion, a phenomenon capable of putting the life on our planet in jeopardy.

A. What We Breathe Matters:

Clean air is vital to human health and the ecosystem. Although most air pollutants come from manufacturing industries and vehicles, but many come from everyday activities. Small changes in our daily routine can make a significant difference in the quality of the air we breathe.

B. Spare The Air:

Climate Change has caused increased heat, floods, and insect outbreaks. In turn, these changes have made wildfires more common and severe. Global warming has also caused a decline in water supplies, reduced agricultural yields, and triggered heat-related concerns in cities.

C. Eco Living:

The most important reason to live sustainably is to simply safeguard the environment. It means ensuring its stability and existence for the future generations. Using eco-friendly products improves the quality of life in terms of mortality, age, disease and illnesses. They ensure the safety of families and the planet. The ecological lifestyle protects and preserves the planet’s environment by recognizing the uniqueness of different ecosystems and species.

Help Create a Safer, Healthier and Sustainable World for Generations to Come.

Water makes up 70% of the earth as well as the human body. This precious resource however, is depleting day by day. Human activities are the sole factor causing it. It is essential to use water wisely and carefully. However, we have been doing the opposite of this till now. Every day, we keep exploiting water for a variety of purposes. In addition, we also keep polluting it day in and day out. Furthermore, there are little or no facilities left for storing rainwater leading to more frequent floods. The need for water conservation is more than ever now.

A. Every Drop Counts:

Water is at the heart of sustainable development and is critical for social and economic development, healthy ecosystems, and for human survival itself. It is vital for reducing the global burden of disease and improving the health, welfare, and productivity of populations.

B. Save the Blue:

Preventing water pollution is important to assure a continuing abundance of water that is safe to use for ourselves and future generations. Efficient water use can also have major environmental, public health, and economic benefits by helping to improve water quality, maintain aquatic ecosystems, and protect drinking water resources.

Whether the disaster is natural or anthropogenic, disasters can wreak havoc on our surroundings and cost human lives as well. Disaster management involves a systematic approach to managing the responsibilities of disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. It is the process of how we ‘prepare for, respond to, and learn from the effects of major failures’ thus lessening their overall adverse impact.

A. Swim or Sink:

Floods have huge social consequences for communities and individuals. They damage property and endanger the lives of humans and other beings. Rapid water runoff causes soil erosion and accompanies deposition of sediment at various locations, as well as fish spawning sites and other wildlife habitats, which may become polluted or completely destroyed.

B. Cosmic Stroke:

The economic impact due to the cloudburst was tremendous in the form of loss of human and animal life, building and forest, loss of existing crops including fruits, and arable land, and loss of bridges. Over the long-term, as global warming accelerates, Arctic ice melt will lead to a sea level rise that will probably threaten coastal populations around the world. As the Arctic changes, it creates new opportunities and new challenges that will shape the region for decades to come.

C. Endemics:

Pandemics can cause sudden, widespread morbidity and mortality as well as social, political, and economic disruption. The world has endured several notable pandemics, including the Black Death, the Spanish flu, and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Epidemics, endemics and pandemics- all have an undeniably significant impact on mankind.

D. Rehab and Rebuild:

Rehabilitation and rebuilding is vital to the health of many ecosystems and the livelihoods of communities across the globe. Ecological restoration can help sustain the rich diversity of human cultures on our planet by supporting relationships between humans and the environment that are mutually beneficial. Rehabilitation of ecosystem repairs and replaces the primary ecosystem structures and functions that have been altered or eliminated by disturbance.

Build Integrative & Regenerative Lifestyles, Communities & Societies.

Waste management is essential in today’s society. Due to an increase in population, the production of waste increasing at an alarming rate damaging the quality of life for many. Waste management refers to the management of waste through proper disposal and recycling. Moreover, waste management needs proper techniques keeping in mind the environmental situations. The most important method is the recycling of waste. Recycling is the reusing of things that are scrapped.

A. Trap the Scrap:

Sustainable waste management reduces and avoids the amount of single-use plastic products along with increasing the amount recycled at the same time, which currently stands at just 8.5%. Compost promotes higher yields of agricultural crops.

B. Sustainable Goals:

The National Environment Policy aims to protect, conserve and restore Pakistan’s environment in order to improve the quality of life of the citizens through sustainable development. The objectives of the policy are; Conservation, restoration, and efficient management of environmental resources. Society must take action to protect the environment through recycling, reusing, and composting; making better transport choices; reducing electricity usage; buying local; donating to conservation groups; avoiding toxic chemicals, choosing sustainable personal actions, obeying just environmental law, and promoting sustainable arrangements

According to the Holy Qur’an, environmental conservation is a religious duty as well as social obligation, and not an optional matter.

Natural systems are not just critical to the survival of the nine million plant and animal species with which we share this planet; they are also key to humanity’s own future, which is increasingly being threatened by our failure to reduce pollution and protect the ecological foundations of life itself.
Conservation is the practice of caring for these resources so all living things can benefit from them now and in the future. All the resources needed for survive, such as food, water, air, and shelter, come from nature itself. Over-exploitation of natural resources leads to the exhaustion of the resources. Therefore, the current resources cannot be used at the same pace as nothing will be left for future generations.

There’s no next time, it’s now or never!

The world is at a crossroads. The future of life on our planet is in jeopardy. Humanity has overreached in its pursuit of affluence. Time is an ever flowing entity, and it’s passing with every moment. Just thinking on doing something is not going to get that work done. If we want to do something, we need to act now. If we don’t, we may lose the chance forever. It hurts to think about ‘what ifs’. So for us not to have what ifs, better do it now. What are we thinking? What will we do? Lets do something now!

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much. [al-Shura 42:30]
