Respect

Respect

Respect is an attitude of honoring people and caring about their rights. Speaking and acting respectfully with people gives them the dignity they deserve. It is particularly important to be respectful towards elders, like our parents, grandparents and teachers because they are more experienced, wiser and can guide us in many aspects.

Islam teaches us to treat all beings with respect, honor and dignity. The most deserving of respect is our Creator Allah (s.w.t) Himself. Respect begins with loving and obeying the commandments of Allah(s.w.t) and from this respect flow all the manners and high standards of morality that are inherent in Islam. Islam requires that each individual learn to obey the Creator and thus treat oneself, mankind, other beings and the environment with respect.

“And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger and fears Allah and is conscious of Him – it is those who are the attainers.” [Surah An-Nūr24:52]

Respect involves treating others the way we would like to be treated.

“Oyou who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the wrongdoers.” [Surah Al-Ĥujurāt49:11]

A person who keeps himself busy doing good deeds and seeking Allah’s pleasure is a person who knows the true meaning of respect.
